Cartier-Bresson: THE SURREAL ZEN

Google translation - excerpt of article by Joan Fontcuberta

Eugene Smith was leading only Cartier-Bresson in sarcasm and irony. In the heat of an argument, Smith said:
    - “And you, Henri, how many good pictures, but really good, you think you’ve done in your life?”

To this question-trap was an expectant hush among the audience. The two photographers were published throughout his career a dozen books, playing each one hundred or more images. How to translate the thousands of “decisive moments” in a small number of masterpieces? What seemed clear was that whatever the response, Smith would chastise his opponent reducing the number, censoring and a possible low level of self. Therefore, in anticipation, Cartier-Bresson and opted for a figure ostensibly meager and modest:
    - “I believe that about ten. Maybe twelve.”

To which the other replied impetuous:
    - “Go Now What an exaggeration! As many have done three, good good.”

Cartier-Bresson lived 95 years. Such longevity and an intense dedication eyes did not allow more than three limited Smith nice pictures. Maybe everything else was merely brave trials, sketches and tests undoubtedly valuable but especially strongly required for access to the supreme excellence of those three outcomes. “It is homologated this theory to other fields of art? Met Picasso more than three teachers really work?

Panama Travel Tips

Or how to be a safe and happy gringo.

Time to visit - The “dry season” is from January - April. Still rains at times but not all day or every day.

What to bring - Anything you need you can buy here. I come with a carry on and buy some clothes and shoes on arrival. The breathable shirts work great. I wear long sleeve during day and short a night. Cotton turns into wet rag.

Transportation - Taxis in PC are $1.25 per person. They may try to charge you more because you are a gringo. Just give them $1.25-$2.00 and get out of cab. Buses in PC costs 25 cents. You can also take buses just about anywhere in the country. Cheaper than flying, but you must have a sense of humor. Never know what my happen.

Walking - You can walk to many of the areas of PC - Punta Patilla, Bella Vista, Balboa Bay and El Cangrejo (which is my favorite hood). Become a shade walker - walk on shady side of street and under over hangs. I know the women are beautiful but be aware. It is common to see big wholes and objects sticking up in the sidewalks. Sidewalk photo. Very easy to get hurt. Also be very careful of vehicles. They will not stop for you! Cross the street where there is less traffic, which is sometimes easier in the middle of the block than an intersection.

PC is relatively safe but there some areas you definitely don’t want to walk around - peligroso (dangerous) . Ask questions and be street smart. I haven’t had any problems but know others who have. If you go to beautiful Casco Viejo (San Felipe) area of PC take a cab. There isn’t safe way to get there on foot. Also feel free to ask the policia. There is even a tourist police, which one time gave me a ride from one area to another. They dont want gringos to get in trouble.

Hydrate - Drink lots of water!

Attire in PC - You rarely see people wearing shorts in the city unless they are gringos. The construction workers even shower at work and wear clean clothes to work and back.  It is very improper especially for women to wear shorts. Skirts, pants and capris are fine. I do wear shorts during the day, but never when going out at night.

The culture - Slow down. If you are in a hurry or expect things to be as they are at home you wont be happy. Everything takes longer than you think. When eating out ask for the bill (la cuenta) otherwise you may never get it. And even then it takes a long time. Relax, when you get frustrated just remind yourself of a favorite saying here - TIP This is Panama.

The people - very warm and generous and many speak English. Get to know them they are well aquainted with people from Estados Unidas because of our long connection to Panama. After all we created a war with Colombia so we could capture that area and building the canal.

Panama City - is a big exciting modern city with wonderful restaurants clubs and accompanying problems of a building boom with infrastructure lagging. Traffic is extremely bad. That’s why many times you are better off walking than taking a taxi

Ecosystem - The Smitsonian Institute claims that Panama has the most biodiverse ecosystem of any country in the world. Explore. Also Panama has a very large indigenous population living in about the same manner for hundreds of years. http://www.rainforests.net/betadiversity.htm

Enjoy, Panama is a beautiful country.

How I Became an iPhoneographer

Northwest native, Boeing web and graphic designer escapee, Dixon Hamby, left his native land to become a travel photographer. Fate hit him on the head (literally) in Panama when an errant palm frond fell and injured his neck, thereby rendering him unable to lift his DSLR. iPhoneography filled the void and his creativity took a new direction.

Ten Guidelines for Making Twitter a Better Experience for Everyone

Getting and Keeping Followers

1. Please, please dont reply to a single person with a thank you. DM works fine. You are just filling up the timeline with a personal conversation.

2. It is okay to DM at times instead of retweeting everything. Believe me, what happens when you RT too much people glaze over everything you say and may miss when you post one of your own messages.

3. Wonderful to share what you are listening to, eating, thinking, hating, loving occasionally, but we dont need to know every detail of your life.

4. Where you are, most of us don’t care. I know you love Starbucks. We are all somewhere. As a friend once said “I the mayor of my toilet.”

5. Automatic retweets. Get off twitter, its too real for you.

6. If you are following millions of people you better have GREAT content because we know you arent listening to us. It is all about you. Its called social media, not worship media.

7. Dont try to sell stuff all the time. Its okay at times, but twitter is really about sharing. Like a relationship, what you put in you get back.

8. Tweets are best with useful content/information or links. For example - I saw Tron and it sucked, instead of I am going to see Tron. If you use it as a one to one chat room it becomes annoying. Save that for when 3 or more people are involved.

9. Ask questions, get to know people, share and be kind. “All you need is love.”

10. Most important, use humor. Life is hard and we all need a laugh.

Note:  Retweet everything I post. Not really, see #10

P.S. I am not a fan of #FF Follow Friday. Has turned into an exercise in patting each other on the back. And again just fills up the timeline.
